Subway Construction and Living Creatures: Wisdom for Coexisting Cities

This educational and experiential tour, organized in collaboration with Obayashi Corporation, focuses on balancing urban development with environmental conservation. Subway construction is an impressive feat of technology, using giant shield machines to dig underground, but behind the scenes, consideration for the diverse living creatures and natural environment is essential. This tour explains how tunnels for Singapore’s Cross Island Line are designed and constructed, suppressing noise and vibration and protecting groundwater and the soil while creating a safe and comfortable urban transportation network. Participants also get to learn about specific efforts to protect Singapore’s nature reserve and wildlife, providing insight into how human convenience can coexist with nature. This is an intellectual and sustainable urban exploration that demonstrates how technological advances not only support the future of cities, but are also directly linked to protecting life on earth.
